I am an optimist and, in the expectation that there will be continued good weather this summer, I’m about to order a seersucker suit. That the word is adapted from a Hindi phrase tells its own story about the fabric’s suitability for very hot weather. That’s presumably why gentlemen from America’s southern states so enthusiastically adopted it last century, and why it’s never been very popular in the UK.

Thanks to the current crop of luxury gins on the market, mother’s ruin has never tasted better. To be counted as a gin, the recipe must contain juniper (a tart, slightly citrussy, aromatic berry), though most are also made with a selection of botanicals that impart distinctive flavours. Bombay Sapphire — the vodka drinker’s gin— is perhaps the most neutral on the market, but for those with more adventurous tastes, here are three we’ve recently sampled.
