To mark its 2oth anniversary the design museum has commissioned four leading designers – Tord Boontje, Margaret Calvert (above), Konstantin Grcic and architect David Chipperfield - to produce an original piece of artwork that will be sold exclusively in the Design Museum shop, each available as an edition of 100. £100, designmuseumshop.com [Read more...]

To mark the release of Bacardi’s Limited Edition Heritage rum (a recreation of its 100 year-old recipe coming in at 44.5 per cent ABV rather than the typical 37.5 per cent), we thought we’d take a look at Hemingway’s favourite tipple, the daiquiri. [Read more...]

As anyone who’s been caught in the recent downpours will attest, a good rain jacket is essential at this time of year. So it’s good to discover that 6876, who recently moved into a ‘rolling product’ operation, has made this Brecon parka jacket. Produced using a premium Italian technical cotton mix, it’s laminated, waterproof and, biblical floods aside, should be enough to keep the elements at bay. £325, from www.sixeightsevensix.com

Earlier this week, Esquire enjoyed the hospitality of the Swiss Embassy. We mingled, we accepted a refreshing beverage or two and wondered (silently) where the pyramid of Ferrero Rocher chocolates had got to. Campo Viejo is part of the Pernod Ricard stable (which, amongst a host of spirits, also owns Australian producer Jacob’s Creek). And while there’s no need to be snobby about buying into a big brand, it’s worth knowing when choosing a rioja. The region has spent a lot of time and money trying to reinvigorate itself of late – as a quick look at the stylish labels in your local off-license will attest – thanks to a new generation of wine-makers coming to the fore. The latest addition to the Morgans Hotel Group portfolio (which includes the Hudson in New York and St Martin’s Lane in London) opened this week in Boston. The Ames aims (sorry) to combine slick modern design with a dose of old-school historical charm – the lobby, for example, features both original features (mosaic ceiling and marble and brass suitcase) alongside freshly commissioned art installations. The theme continues in the understated 114 rooms and Woodward, the in-house bar and restaurant. Could we have a reason to visit Boston over New York? 1 Court Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02108, www.ameshotel.com

The reputation of the chunky shawl-collared cardigan has undergone a remarkable rehabilitation in recent years. Having once typified naff Seventies style, as worn by David Starsky in Starsky & Hutch, everyone from designer cashmere brands to high street chains is selling a version this winter. [Read more...]

The arrival of these Marmite breakfast bars elicited murmurings of interest in (roughly) 64 per cent of the editorial desk this week. The lovers amongst us ripped off the packaging to savour the wheaty, oaty, marmitey and on the face of it quite healthy snack. The haters raised their sceptical eyebrows and slunk off to finish their bacon sandwiches. Savoury cereal bars? A controversial choice, but better than it sounds. £1.99 for a pack of six
