Enjoy summer indoors

Blog - picnic

There are many things we English plan for the Summer, but in our hearts we always know a mean douse of rain is likely to ruin most of them.

But it looks as though this year one of them – the traditional village green picnic – will be saved from our meteorological birthright by a collective of musicians, filmmakers and general artsy-types who have planned the week-long Cafe du Pique-Nique (that’s an indoor picnic) opening at The Future Gallery in London tomorrow.

We say ‘traditional’, but then picnics of English folklore rarely include a folk festival, indoor disco or an exclusive film premiere from Werner Herzog – all of which and more will be taking place between Saturday 13th and Sunday 20th on Great Newport Street. Thankfully, the staples of a grassy floor, gallons of cider and bread-based snacks will still be firmly in place – alongside cart-wheeling lessons, relaxation classes and wasp piñata swatting.

It’s the kind of brilliant Britishness that would have The Kinks in, well, kinks, and it’s all available for £6-£15 depending on the day you want to join in. Check here for details – and leave your umbrellas at home.
