Given our nation’s evident lack of a reasonable summer season, swimwear for the British man often ends up a mere afterthought — garish board shorts purchased in a panic at Heathrow Terminal 5, or an ancient pair of school-era trunks fished out once a year. This need no longer be the case.
When chosen with care, trunks can be both a functioning and stylish part of your wardrobe. As with most things style-related, know your limits and don’t be over-ambitious; a pair of well-cut swim shorts will prove flattering, but an ill-fitting “thong” will be inevitably grotesque.
We’ll be running a few of our favourites over the coming weeks, starting this week with our pick of the stripy and block colour styles.
Stripes (above, left) – A classic look, ideal for those looking to make a poolside statement without looking like an extra on Booze Britain. Bright green/white striped swim shorts by Hackett £60
Block colour (above, right) – Colour is big news this season, particularly when it comes in bright Pantone shades; it’s also a great way to give yourself an edge in the sun lounger style stakes, particularly if you’re a bit of a “navy person”. Orange/green boxer swim shorts by Ralph Lauren Polo £45
