

Sam Hancock, Esquire’s favourite motor racing legend in the making, has been telling us about what’s it like to race at the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race. Sam was looking good to finish fourth – a career making position – in last week’s race, when sadly the engine of his Aston Martin let go. Last night, Esquire found itself in the very agreeable surroundings of The Clarendon, an extremely nice pub located between Holland Park and Ladbroke Grove. We got talking to the owner Mikee, who took us down to his superb wine cellar and cracked open a bottle of cheekily named South African red, Goats Do Roam. Massimo Osti’s iconic Goggle Jacket was first released as a gift to drivers as part of CP Company’s sponsorship of the 1988 Mille Miglia motor race. The Italian endurance race saw some of the most beautiful road cars doing battle over 1000 miles, which was why Osti designed the goggles in the hood and the window in the left sleeve through which drivers could check their watches. Aside from its expected pant-changingly rapid acceleration and sci-fi looks, the surprising discovery was that unlike most marques and models with superpower pretensions, this is a car that engenders genuine goodwill from the passing pedestrian and fellow motorist.
