The winter woolly blues

albam-bobble-hat

Finding a hat in February is no easy feat. Despite the evidence to the contrary, shops still insist that spring starts the first week of January. This leaves stores with an abundance of lightweight jackets, thin jumpers and a whole host of other clothing that people have no use for right now. As you’d expect from an Esquire favourite, Albam are just about the only place where you can actually find a woolly hat. And yes, the bobble can be taken off. www.albamclothing.com

Fisherman’s Friend

norse-projects-jumper

Combining fashion’s everlasting love with all things nautical with Esquire’s burgeoning love of all things Scandinavian, Norse Projects were always destined to crop up on our radar. Originally a streetwear brand, Norse Projects’ name is inspired by an maritime story. While their Autumn/Winter 2010 collection features everything from Filson-esque gloves to surprisingly wearable rollneck jumpers, their Spring/Summer 2010 focuses on the fisherman’s side of things. With a rapidly expanding amount of stockists, Norse is a brand to take note of. www.norsestore.com

Morris Day knows what time it is

Morris Day Purple Rain

We wouldn’t blame you if you dismissed Purple Rain’s sartorial style as a sea of ruffles, leather jackets and heels. But having just watched this 1984 movie again, there is one man who comes out of the film with his style senses intact – The Time’s lead singer Morris Day. (more…)

Kris Van Assche swaps fashion for flowers

Kris Van Assche

Fashion designer Kris Van Assche downed cloth to make a series of giant flowers made of mirror and, concurrently for the stem, tripods, the pieces accessorised with an interactive mechanism allowing visitors the opportunity to plunge into the Dior Homme Artistic Director’s designs. Spectators are suddenly engulfed by the designer’s choice of images, sounds and odours, some of which were inspired by his past collections. If fashionable flora are your thing, Van Assche’s Picaflor runs at the Galerie des Galeries in Paris throughout February.  www.galeriedesgaleries.com

Remixing the classics

Pointer Tanju Loafer

In case you hadn’t noticed, dressing like an older gentleman is in right now. That’s right – your granddad has become fashionable without even realising it. This movement has led to younger brands showing a new appreciation for the classics, making slight tweaks to a classic style. Pointer are a prime example of this movement, training their employees at John Lobb so they understand the fundamentals of footwear. Their Tanju penny loafer, which mixes suede, leather and a striped cotton lining, is a perfect example of their philosophy.
