Q&A with Grizzly Bear

GRIZZLY_BEAR_01

Grizzly Bear, purveyors of ethereal, experimental and thoroughly excellent indie-pop and stars of our music portfolio in February are currently playing a selection of UK dates. Most of them have been sold out forever, but our spies tell us there are a few seats available at Warwick Arts Centre on Friday. If you haven’t already got tickets — or don’t happen to be in Coventry — here’s a chance to feel involved via this extended interview with multi-instrumentalist/producer Chris Taylor [far left] and vocalist/guitarist Daniel Rossen [far right]. And don’t worry, they’ll be back. (more…)

Can 3/4 length trousers ever be acceptable?

visvim-hiroki-nakamura
And no, this question isn’t rhetorical. With trousers creeping higher by the second, it’s only a matter of time before we reach the 3/4 length stage. It hasn’t happened yet, but it’s starting to pop up amongst the most influential crowd in Japan (aka the birthplace for trends like this). Even folks like Visvim’s founder Hiroki Nakamura (pictured above) are wearing trousers so high they’re cropped a couple of inches above boots. It’s a scary thought, but come next winter your friend with the 3/4 length umbro shorts could end up being the most fashion forward person you know. You’ve been warned.

Kitsuné. But not as you know it

kitsune_staff
Kitsuné Maison, the musical minds behind some of the biggest acts of 2009 including La Roux, obviously weren’t happy with ridding you of all your money on music downloads, and look set to empty your wallet of even more cash with the opening of the new Kitsuné temporary clothes store on Omotesando in Tokyo. Stocked with their own-brand totes, sneakers, shirts and apparel, in a sort of toned-down East London aesthetic, the lifestyle entrepreneurs seem to be as adept in fashion as they are in music. www.maisonkitsune.fr/clothes/special/boutique-tokyo/ (more…)

The hourglass gets a makeover

Hourglass

We’ve followed Marc Newson’s career ever since we ate at Coast, a restaurant he designed in London in the mid-Nineties, and saw shots of a concept car, the 021C, he created for Ford back in 1999. Newson’s Ikepod brand of watches launched around the same time, and, amazingly, looks almost as far out and futuristic now as it did then. We recently met Newson to hear about his new timepiece, the Hourglass, which really is a big hourglass. (more…)

In praise of the cashmere polo

sweat_grey
The launch of a new season of Drakes products is always bitter sweet. The upside is that there’s an exciting new array of ties and accessories available, at least half of which we’d like to own, but the downside is the massive impending hit on the credit card. (more…)

Bags to basics

sunglasses_case

In an era when we are inundated with more and more “stuff”, it can be hard to remember what exactly each bag, compartment, pouch and case we own is actually for, turning the original concept of the accessory – convenience – on its head. Natalia Brilli’s new leather range, in which the proposed contents of her items are pressed into the façade of each bag, may well be the answer to this very modern dilemma. www.nataliabrilli.fr (more…)

You should have gone to Orgreen

Orgreen

We only recently discovered Orgreen, a spectacle brand from Copenhagen. There’s a lot to like about it, chief among which is that it’s a design-driven company that’s as interested in the quality of manufacture as it is in styling. (more…)
