I recently had a second fitting with Neapolitan trouser maker Salvatore Ambrosi. Ambrosi is something of an internet phenomenon; he’s blogged about in such reverential tones that it’s hard to avoid drawing the conclusion that he’s the world’s best trouser maker, but without making a trip to his workrooms in Naples it’s hard to be sure. The worlds of tailoring and reality television have surprisingly aligned this week with the news that Deborah Meaden from Dragons’ Den has bought Fox Brothers, the pre-eminent West Country flannel mill. Fox Brothers opened for business in 1772 in Wellington, Somerset and continues to make fine fabrics to this day. We recently featured a suit made with Fox cloth here and this navy pinstripe suit, made by Gieves & Hawkes, is also made from Fox flannel. www.foxflannel.com

In March last year I wrote about cloth re-issues and one of the fabrics mentioned was called Eden in Paris, which was commissioned by Michael Alden, who runs the London Lounge website. Things move slowly in the world of tailoring, but just before Christmas I collected a suit from my tailor made from the Eden in Paris cloth. (more…)
