The 25th of October is the feast of St Crispin and while it’s probably best known for being the day in 1415 that Henry V gave his “band of brothers” speech before the battle of Agincourt it’s also a big day for shoemakers – St Crispin is their patron saint.

Back in May I wrote about the unique process of ordering a pair of trousers from Neapolitan tailor Salvatore Ambrosi. They eventually arrived wrapped without ceremony in a brown paper envelope and were immediately put aside because by then spring was turning to summer and substantial cords were temporarily of no use to me. However, now the leaves are falling from the trees and both the temperature and the colours in the park have put cords back on the agenda. [Read more...]

To promote his next collection he has made a short black and white film narrated by Larry Lamb, and while it teeters on the brink of pretension, it’s also rather charming. Throughout my twenties minimalism defined my taste in clothes, an urge that was given designer endorsement at the start of the Noughties when Hedi Slimane was in the ascendancy during his years at Dior Homme. In recent years, however, I have gradually started to believe that there is a place for ostentation and ornamentation in a man’s wardrobe.
