Like your childhood dog being sent to the 'farm', it's time to say goodbye to an old, faithful, favourite.

Sure, the recent iOS 10 update let you finally remove Apple's little-used apps from your smartphone and tablet home screen, but now the big-A is taking things even further by killing off one of its long-standing core apps for good. Sob.

Which one? Well, sadly you're going to have to put up with those Stocks and Compass apps for a little while longer. Instead, it's the tried and tested Videos app that will shortly be no more.

Although still present in the latest iOS 10.2 (beta version 3) build, according to 9to5Mac, the Videos app will soon be knocked on the head to make way for Apple's recently announced TV app.

Syncing purchases with on-demand content from all manner of video-providing sources, the new TV app will merge all your playable content on every Apple device you own, from your Apple TV to your iPhone 7.

Given the crossover with Videos - the TV app's feature-inferior cousin - it's been suggested that Videos will be dropped from the pre-installed list, but will still be available to download from the App Store for those keen to enjoy its more simplistic charms.

If, as expected, the Videos app is knocked on the head, don't expect to see it disappearing from your iPhone or iPad anytime soon.

Although set to drop later this year, the TV app will be limited to the United States at launch. Apple has yet to confirm when us Brits will be able to make use of the new service that will also let Apple TV users utilise Siri to tune into live TV.
