If you weren't impressed by this year's smartphone offering from Apple, there's a good chance you decided to hold off and wait for the reported overhaul coming in 2017.

The company looks set to make that even more challenging, though, with Japanese Apple blog Macotakara suggesting the iPhone 7 will soon be released in a fresh colour variant.

So if you were currently struggling to choose between the Jet Black, Matte Black, Silver, Rose Gold and Gold options currently available, a red colourway may be more to your liking.

Interestingly, if true, the report also seems to catapult much of what we've already heard for Apple's 2017 iPhone plans.

Claiming to have information from a source at a company supplier in Taiwan, the report states next year's iPhone will be the "iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus, which are the updated version of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus".

Err, guys, what about that fancy iPhone 8 we've heard so much about?

Well, if this report is anything to go by, the next device to drop will stay with the current design, and the main difference will be a new A11 processor.

Even more soul-crushing is the claims that the alleged 7S design "does not seem to come together with either the wireless charge or glass chassis".

Of course, this particular 'leak' should be treated with the same salt-dousing as all the whispers claiming the next iPhone will offer a bezel-less OLED display, 3D camera, all-glass casing and wireless charging.

So, for now, let's just hope that Apple isn't planning a minimal upgrade for the third year in a row.
