This year hasn't been an easy one, but David Attenborough's second Planet Earth series has made this murky winter, specifically Sunday evenings, more bearable.

And the great news is a third installment is in the works. According to the Telegraph, BBC producers want to have a new series made by the time Attenborough turns 100 in 10 years time. Producer Mike Gunton said the BBC would be "crazy" to rule out making Planet Earth III.

"When [Attenborough] decides he doesn't want to do any more, we will have to rethink how we make these programmes," Gunton said. "You can't replace him – it's pointless trying."

The latest installment, which took four years to create, has proved more popular with young people than The X Factor - a fact that Attenborough says pleases him "enormously".

The first Planet Earth series was created 10 years ago.
