2016 has been awful. Let's get that out of the way.

While we say a much-needed farewell to a year that has itself been full of heartbreaking goodbyes, one person has paid tribute to the stars we've lost with something truly poignant.

Artist Chris Barker has created a Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band homage to all the celebrities who passed away in 2016. And, much like the classic Beatles song, it's guaranteed to raise a smile.

Alongside big names such as David Bowie, Prince, Terry Wogan and Muhammad Ali, his collage includes George Michael and Carrie Fisher, who both passed away in the last few days.

Barker quipped on his Tumblr: "A lot of people speculate that Bowie was actually the glue that was holding the universe together."

The artist first posted the image last month but has been forced to update it since, following the passing of even more public figures.

"This year really has got a wicked sense of humour," Barker told The Huffington Post.

"Just when you think it can't shock you any more it manages to pull something else out of the bag. I dread to think what's next frankly."

Also referenced in the picture are numerous world events, including Brexit, Donald Trump and, of course, Toblerone.

Barker is hoping for all those who enjoy his creation to donate to a charity, suggesting the memorial fund for murdered MP Jo Cox.
