Lindsay Lohan's mum has denied that her daughter has converted to Islam, after sparking the rumours by deleting all of her Instagram posts and updating her bio with the words "Alaikum salam".

The Arabic phrase – which means "Peace be unto you" – is a friendly greeting often used by Muslims in social situations and during worship.

But Dina Lohan has confirmed to Gossip Cop that Lindsay is simply taking a break from social media.

The change to Lohan's social status could just be a reflection of her respect for Dubai, the country the actor and singer now seems to call home, but this social media "cleanse" led to some fans believing that she has converted to Islam to become a practicing Muslim.

Lohan was pictured with a copy of the Koran, the Islamic religious text, back in 2015 and has recently been pictured in a headscarf in Turkey.

Having faced a backlash in the US seemingly for both, Lohan defended herself during an appearance on Turkish TV show Haber Turk.

"They crucified me for it in America," she said (via Dawn.com). "They made me seem like Satan. I was a bad person for holding that Koran."

"I was so happy to leave [America] and go back to London after that," Lohan continued, "because I felt so unsafe in my own country. If this [Islam] is something that I want to learn, this is my own will."

Lohan also opened up about her experiences working with Syrian refugees in Turkey, where she was presented with the headscarf to wear.

"When the woman put that headscarf on me, I felt really honoured because she went out of her own way to allow me to be a part of my own culture and she didn't have to do that," she said.

"I said I really liked the colour of her headscarf and she gave it to me, and maybe she had two and she gave me one – there's more in the story that occurred.

"Because this woman took the time to give me this, and a part of herself, not even knowing me, I'm not taking it off."

However, this is not the first time she has expressed an interest in religion. She wore a Kabbalah red string bracelet during her teenage years, which is believed to ward off misfortune brought about by the 'evil eye'.

Lohan has had a very public battle with alcohol and substances in the past, with the actress checking into rehab on several occasions.

The Mean Girls star also had a tumultuous break-up with her billionaire businessman ex-boyfriend Egor Tarabasov, which saw a video of a shocking fight between the two go viral.
