This fun little project from programmer Gary Simon recreates the look and feel of everyone's favorite '90s chat app, AOL Instant Messenger.

Simon admits the app is pretty basic--right now anyone can log in with any screen name and be transported to the same group chat room, much like the chat rooms that AOL provided in its browser. The tool bar buttons don't work and there's no way to have a private chat. But the app looks perfect, and when you hear that door-creaking sound that signals someone has logged on, it's impossible to not be transported back to the halcyon days of Windows 95.
