Notorious as one of the worst films ever made, The Room has a massive cult following with widespread interactive screenings and has been the subject of at least one documentary and several books.

And now, it's getting its own movie.

The Disaster Artist is the story of the making of The Room, featuring James Franco as The Room star, writer and director Tommy Wiseau, plus Dave Franco as his leading man Greg Sestero (who plays Mark in The Room). In a recent Instagram pic, you can see Franco transformed into Wiseau, and he's virtually unrecognisable.

It's based on the non-fiction book of the same name written by Sestero and Tom Bissell about the very strange ways of Wiseau, the incongruities and problems on set, and how this terrible, strange film somehow became a huge international cult hit purely based on the virtue of being awful.

Wiseau plays Johnny, a banker who lives with his long -term girlfriend, Lisa. One day, Lisa gets bored of him and tries to seduce his best friend Mark. They throw footballs wearing tuxes.

[We're sorry this picture from The Room is grainy. It's not a very well-made film.]

Apparently The Room was in part inspired by The Talented Mr Ripley, which it is nothing like. Mark is named after Matt Damon because Wiseau apparently misheard and thought his name was Mark Damon.

James Franco is directing The Disaster Artist, with Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Alison Brie starring alongside him and his brother, Dave. It's due to premiere at the SXSW Festival, which begins on 10 March.
