The day after President Donald Trump won the 2016 election, The New York Times' specialist correspondent on ISIS and al Qaeda, Rukmini Callimachi, reported that ISIS was "rejoicing" about Trump's win and called it "the start of America's demise." Now, Callimachi says the terrorist organization is similarly responding to Trump's Muslim ban.

On Wednesday morning, Callimachi fired out a series of tweets explaining her experience over the past several days reporting from eastern Mosul, now under Iraqi control. "It's amazing to finally be able to walk freely here," she noted.

She also added that she reported in Mosul in November and December of last year. "Guess what's different on this trip?" she tweeted. "Everywhere I go, Iraqis want to ask about the visa ban."

In addition, Callimachi's translator contacted a resident of Western Mosul who said ISIS has "been openly celebrating the ban," adding that they've been calling it "The Blessed Ban":

"ISIS sees this as their doing," she tweeted. "They succeeded in scaring the daylight out of America. ISIS, according to this resident of Western Mosul, thinks their terror tactic worked. They frightened the most powerful man in the world…And they are celebrating, he says, because it proves to their followers that America really does 'hate' Islam."
