Stephen Fry kicked off yesterday's BAFTA Awards ceremony in typical celebrity fashion: by throwing shade at Donald Trump. Obviously.

Fry, who is hosting this year's BAFTA Film Awards, followed in the footsteps of Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes and Stranger Things' David Harbour at the SAG Awards by referencing the American President in his opening monologue.

Political speech may not have been what the BBC had in mind for this year's BAFTAs, but in the form of Fry, that's exactly what they got, and we now know one thing for certain: Fry is definitely Team Meryl.

Opening this year's ceremony, Fry referenced the Leading Actress nominee's fallout with President Trump after her rousing speech at this year's Golden Globes, in which she slammed Trump for mocking a disabled reporter.

Following the spat, Trump tweeted his response, calling Streep an "overrated actress", and within minutes of tonight's opening speech, Fry placed himself firmly in Meryl's corner.

"One of the greatest actresses of all time," he said, referencing the actress. "Only a blithering idiot would think otherwise!"

And then, in direct reference to Trump's comments, he added: "I would say underrated to be honest."

He then proceeded to walk into the audience and kiss Meryl, making for a lovely moment - not that Fry was quite done with the American President just yet, oh no.

Introducing the first award of the night, Fry decided to have ANOTHER dig at Trump, this time over his close relationship with Putin's Russia.

"Let's find out who the Russians have decided have won," Fry said, attracting more laughter from the audience.

And even when he left the topic of President Trump behind, the jokes kept on rolling and not even the Duke of Cambridge was safe when Fry took the opportunity to make a light-hearted Danny Dyer-related quip that also gained rapturous applause.

"After watching a recent episode of Who Do You Think You Are, [Prince William] is still recovering from the devastating news that he's related to Danny Dyer," he said, drawing a smile from Wills himself.
