There's once again confusion hanging over Captain America star Chris Evans' future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chris is currently busy filming Avengers: Infinity War alongside the other major heroes of the Marvel blockbusters, and is also confirmed to return for that movie's 2019 sequel.

At that point, he will have fulfilled his Marvel contract. In the past, Chris has downplayed the likelihood that he'll switch away from Cap once his Marvel deal expires… but now there's uncertainty again.

A new Esquire US profile on the actor mentions that he's "hurting all over" as he begins his gruelling workouts for Infinity War, adding: "He just started his workout routine the day before to get in shape for the next two Captain America films.

"The movies will be shot back to back beginning in April. After that, no more red- white-and-blue costume for the 35-year-old. He will have fulfilled his contract."

Now, before you start panicking, note that the text of the profile refers to Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel as "Captain America films", which they technically are not. They're ensemble Marvel films – so what's going on?

While Chris's Marvel future might be murky at the moment, we do know where we'll find his character Steve Rogers when the Avengers next reunite.

Having been declared an enemy of the state in last year's Civil War, Steve Rogers gave up the title of Captain America to fight against injustice on his own terms without the Avengers.

Presumably it will be the galactic threat of Thanos that leads him back to the team, but we'll find out for sure when Avengers: Infinity War opens on 27 April, 2018 in the UK and 4 May, 2018 in the US. The sequel follows in 2019.
