The Batman's directorial change could well mean that the Dark Knight's upcoming solo movie will be delayed.

Variety's Justin Kroll has revealed on Twitter that because of new director Matt Reeves's schedule on War of the Planet of the Apes, production on The Batman won't be starting this year.

"Hearing Matt Reeves contracted to work on APES till at least end of June, so production on BATMAN likely not starting till 2018," he claimed.

"Also means any casting rumours you hear are likely BS seeing that he wouldn't have time to meet with any talent till at least July."

One star who has been cast though is Joe Manganiello as villain Deathstroke (who is portrayed by Manu Bennett in TV series Arrow).

Bennett gave us his thoughts on the casting recently, saying he was "very happy" for the star.

Ben Affleck pulled out of directing The Batman back in January after admitting that he can't star in and direct the movie, saying: "It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require."

Then last month, DC Entertainment revealed that Reeves had been signed on to direct Affleck in The Batman after reports of talks breaking down.

"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honoured and excited to be working with Warner Bros," he enthused.

The change could also mean that the script for The Batman – which has already been rewritten by his Argo collaborator Chris Terrio – could get another rewrite.

This week, Affleck released a moving statement which revealed he has been in treatment for "alcohol addiction", but that he is on the road to "a positive recovery" from what he says has been a recurring struggle in his life.
