Ever since the underwhelming second season of True Detective concluded in 2015, the future of the HBO crime series seemed grim. As recently as May of 2016, True Detective seemed all but finished.

Now, however, Entertainment Weekly reports that creator Nic Pizzolatto is working on Season Three and has already written the first two episodes. Pizzolatto has also teamed up with Deadwood and NYPD Blue creator David Milch to work on the third season. According to EW:

The extent of Pizzolatto and Milch's collaboration is still early days and not yet formalized. Obviously, Milch's experience as a writer will be a key component, but for the record he's not expected to serve as the True Detective showrunner (at this stage, there is no specified Season Three showrunner). Also keep in mind a third season has also not yet been greenlit, so new episodes are far from certain.

Though nothing is confirmed, this is promising news for fans, as HBO previously said Pizzolatto would be working on other projects (like an upcoming series with Robert Downey, Jr.) rather than True Detective.

Last year, HBO even admitted Season Two had been a failure because of the timing pressures put on Pizzolatto to complete the scripts. Now that he's had a few years to work at his own pace, perhaps HBO is more comfortable giving him a third season. Clearly they've learned to not rush out a follow-up to a popular debut show, as Westworld won't return until 2018, giving the showrunners time to do it right.

Now, can you please give those scripts to Matthew McConaughey already?
