We've had three different live-action iterations of Spider-Man in the last 15 years, and the first two men to play the titular teenaged web-slinger were old enough to attend their high school reunions. (Tobey Maguire was 26 when he starred in 2002's Spider-Man, and Andrew Garfield was 27 in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man.) Less than ten years after Maguire's last appearance as Spider-Man (and five year's after Garfield's first), we've moved onto our third Peter Parker. But this time, the hero is played by 20-year-old Tom Holland, who is closer in age to the character as written in Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's comics.
He certainly looks, sounds, and acts like a kid! He's angsty and whiny and irreverent. He goofs off and doesn't listen, just your average little punk would. Holland probably the most believable actor to play Spider-Man yet. And in the new trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel is really making sure you don't forget it.
Enter Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark, the smarmy Avengers leader Iron Man. His role in this upcoming Spider-Man movie is to talk down to Parker. Play nice, he tells him: "There are people who handle this sort of thing." But Spider-Man just wants to be treated like any other hero. "I just gotta do this on my own," he tells Stark.
And considering the overwhelming amount of condescending Tony Stark in just one two-minute trailer, maybe Spider-Man would have been better off with his own movie.
