It's pretty clear in the new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer that the latest reboot of this franchise is going to feature A LOT of Iron Man. And along with acting like Peter Parker's condescending father, Tony Stark has another role: building the Spider-Man suit. You know that Tony Stark loves completely unnecessary gadgets! As fans likely noticed in the new trailer, there's a moment where a little drone pops out of the emblem on Spidey's suit and buzzes around to fight crime.

But, what's the deal with it? Where'd it come from? Why'd he have a drone? Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire didn't have drones?

As it turns out, the drone is another upgrade from Stark. As director Jon Watts told The Hollywood Reporter:

There's a precedent for it in the comic books because Tony Stark builds Peter a new suit. Tony Stark is a very bells and whistles kind of guy. We had that set up in Civil War. That was one of the fun brainstorm meetings: What could be in that suit? We made a list of all the neat things that Tony would put in there for Peter to discover or keep him safe. At one point, we just realized "what if that little spider could crawl out and move around and do surveillance?"

Hmmm. OK, but doesn't Spider-Man have Spidey Senses and other such abilities that he's used to fight crime just fine for decades? Does he need to function like a small covert ops team? Do kids these days require superheroes be decked out in iPads and FitBits and selfie sticks to be cool?

As actor Tom Holland added:

Our little drone has 10,000 things it could do. I think we found its proper use in the movie. It's funny—he has a little relationship with the drone, like a little sidekick.

OK, 10,000 things. Like what? Annoying the neighbours? Giving the drone as a Christmas gift and crashing it immediately? Disrupting air traffic? But an adorable little robot sidekick! Sounds like an Iron Man movie...
