It's been over four decades since the first Rocky movie made Sylvester Stallone a huge star – and made instant icons of both Rocky Balboa and his opponent Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers).

Now, Weathers has hinted that he may reunite with Stallone on screen.

"I think we could [reunite], but I have nothing to contribute to whether or not it will happen," he said. "But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it does. There's room for it!"

With a twinkle in his eye, Weathers hinted that the project might involve his Predator co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger too... but insisted that it wasn't linked to the ongoing Expendables movie franchise.

"[It's] something else, that has nothing to do with Expendables," he said.

Surely he's not hinting at a return to the Rocky franchise? The latest entry – 2015's Creed – followed Apollo's son Adonis (Michael B Jordan), but Apollo himself didn't feature, having been killed off in 1985's Rocky IV.

We doubt Stallone would bring Apollo back from beyond the grave – though Rocky IV did feature a robot pal for Paulie (Burt Young), so it's not beyond the films to stray into science-fiction...

Stallone and Weathers most recently reunited at the 2017 Golden Globes, presenting the award for Best Motion Picture, Drama, to Moonlight — the same award Rocky won four decades earlier.

Meanwhile, Arnie and Sly are reuniting to work on a sequel to their 2013 movie Escape Plan.
