A new leak suggests that Nintendo could follow up its hugely popular Nintendo Classic Edition with a SNES mini in 2017

The info was disclosed to Eurogamer by "sources close to the company". According to said sources, the recreation of the SNES is already in development and is scheduled to ship before Christmas.

The new console is expected to retain the plug and play setup of the NES Classic Edition, with no cartridge slot and built-in games.

Apparently the SNES mini is also the prime reason that the NES Classic Edition was recently discontinued, in spite of extraordinary sales.

Nintendo's compact version of the NES came bundled with 30 games and was an instant hit when launched last year. The console quickly sold out again when stocks were replenished and is currently selling upwards of £200 on Ebay.

A SNES version of the console would open up a whole new library of games for resurrection.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System played host to classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, Earthworm Jim and Star Fox.

If those games aren't enough to excite you, we're not sure what will.

Given the extraordinary demand for the NES Classic Edition, which retailed for £60, Nintendo may very well consider a higher price point for its successor. The Nintendo brand is riding high at the moment, and the company doesn't shy away from premium pricing.
