Who can even remember what people spread on their toast before Instagram-worthy became a morning staple? Does bear thinking about.

But your favourite fruit (yes fruit) may actually be harmful to your health as experts warn avocados are putting people in hospital.

Surgeons say they've seen a number of cases of people injured due to bad avocado preparation with the knife. Apparently cutting through the green flesh and finding the stone inside has proved troublesome.

Some poor individuals have even severed their tendons, given themselves permanent damage and needed surgery.

The bizarre injuries have become so common, surgeons are referring to it as 'Avocado Hand'. We can't think of a more middle class injury. Except maybe when you burn yourself with the steam of your coffee maker or turn your skin into ribbons with your new spiralizer.

But as a result of this surge in avocado A&E patients, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons is calling for 'safety labels'.

We know people are desperate to get their avocado chopped, photographed and up on Instagram but surely they don't need safety labels to avoid bloodshed at breakfast?

The rise of Avocado Hand comes after it was revealed we'd actually been slicing avocados wrong this whole time.

Rather than halve the avocado lengthwise, you halve it crosswise. If the avocado is ripe, you just need to squeeze and the stone will pop right out. It's meant to be much easier and there's less chance of cutting yourself with the knife.
