An Israeli presenter was unable to hold back tears as she reported the axing of her own show.

Reporter Geula Even openly cried as she received information live on air that it would be her last show on Israel's Channel One television.

"We are now getting breaking news, a statement in parliament. Actually, tonight will be our last news programme," journalist Geula informed viewers.

Staff had been made aware that the government were planning to close down the state-run Israel Broadcasting Authority, which had run for 49 years, but they didn't know that it would cease to exist after Tuesday evening.

"I do want to thank all the people who worked here all these years. This has been my professional home for many years.

"I hope they will find new jobs and public broadcasting continues to be strong. Even if it exists in a different format.
