Former Disney child stars often aim to shed their bubblegum past by venturing into darker and more mature roles - but nobody has ever taken it this far.

Zac Efron, best known for his part in the High School Musical movie series, been cast as notorious real-life serial killer Ted Bundy in an upcoming biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bundy was executed in 1989 after confessing to carrying out more than 30 murders over the course of at least four years in the mid-to-late 1970s.

The upcoming movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile will be told through the eyes of Bundy's long-time girlfriend, who ultimately turned the killer in to police.

This thriller will be directed by Academy Award and Primetime Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster).

Zac Efron is scheduled to begin filming Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile with director Berlinger in October.

The actor is also working with Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams on The Greatest Showman, which tells the incredible true story of Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
