Other names from the entertainment world have also offered their sympathies, including Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj.

In light of the attack, political parties have stopped campaigning for the forthcoming election. Theresa May said police were treating the blast as "an appalling terrorist attack". Chief constable Ian Hopkins confirmed that the attacker died at the arena.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham thanked the emergency services for their support.

"I want to thank the hundreds of police, fire and ambulance staff who worked through the night… I want to thank the people of Manchester: even in the minutes after the attack they opened their doors to strangers and drove them away from the attack," he said.

"It will be that spirit of Manchester that will prevail and hold us together. We will do whatever we can to support them. We are grieving today but we are strong."
