The first time Dr. Dre called Snoop Dogg, it did not go well. In fact, Snoop hung up on Dre, believing he was a prank caller, according to a recently-released clip from the upcoming HBO documentary, The Defiant Ones.

Dre recalled the first time he heard Snoop's music. The two had met before when Snoop was dealing, but Dre had never heard his music until his step-brother Warren G played a Snoop tape at a bachelor party, Dre said. "I'm like 'That's Snoop?' I'm like, 'Man, this is a fucking diamond in the rough, and we need to polish it up!'"

Impressed with him, Dre called Snoop, but Snoop was disbelieving. "I hung up. Like, this ain't no motherfucking Dr. Dre.' called back, like, 'Be at the studio Monday.'"

At the studio, Dre played a track while Snoop rapped. "His shit was super sick," Dre recalled thinking. The rest is history.

The Defiant Ones, a four-part docu-series, will premiere on HBO July 9. The series will chronicle the partnership between Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine and how these two men transformed hip hop culture.
