Hey, remember that last superhero movie, where a few laughs were had, every building (and most bad guys) was blown to smithereens, and evil was vanquished, only to arise again in the next one-to-five subsequent sequels? Never was a formulaic plot structure more successful, as multiple superhero mega-franchises can attest. But maybe Wonder Women will be successful and surprising, because its female director/lead duo twists that formula. Plus, it is backed by a slew of generally positive reviews and a base of comic book fans hungry for a female lead.
And Chris Pine—the best Chris, the one with his own super successful franchise who took a sidekick role to play Wonder Woman's love interest—is advocating hard for the movie. As Pine told Vanity Fair at last week's premiere, superhero movies have been full to bursting with perspective from the "male prism." One problem: "Men are not all that smart," Pine said. "We tend to want to kill each other all the time, so it's nice to finally have a fresh, female perspective with important themes." Indeed.
Pine continued: "To have a female superhero story that is about love and compassion and nurturing of life than the opposite is very important. At the heart of the movie, it's about people falling in love and being passionate and being heroic. It's a great lesson for everyone to learn instead of other movies where shit is blowing up all the time." Evil will still be vanquished, and shit will still blow up, but all signs lead to it blowing up better in Wonder Woman.
