Nick Clegg has lost his seat in Sheffield Hallam to Labour's Jared O'Mara with a majority of 2,125.

The former Liberal Democrats leader and deputy Prime Minister has held the seat since 2005 and had a majority of 2,353 in 2015. Former ministers Jo Swinson and Nick Cable have won back their seats after losing them in 2015.

Clegg congratulated O'Mara on a "spectacular victory".

"In my time in parliament, I have never shirked from political battles," he said in his concession speech. I have never retreated from the political battlefield. I have always sought to stand by the liberal values I believe in.

"But I have, of course, encountered this evening something that many people have encountered before me tonight... you live by the sword, you die by the sword."

Former colleague Cable said Clegg "will be looked upon by historians as a really major figure", thanks to his work in the coalition government.

In 2010, under Clegg's leadership, the Liberal Democrats joined the Conservatives to form a coalition. Clegg became deputy PM to Cameron. At the time, the party held 57 seats, but at the 2015 election they suffered a huge blow, retaining just eight.
