Prodigy, legendary New York rapper and one half of pioneering hip-hop group Mobb Deep, has passed away at the age of 42.

A representative for Prodigy – otherwise known as Albert Johnson – has confirmed to Billboard that the rapper died earlier today (20 June) in a Las Vegas hospital.

"It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep.

"We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family's privacy at this time," the statement read.

It is believed that Johnson had been in hospital for several days due to complications caused by sickle cell anemia, a condition he had lived with since birth.

Mobb Deep were often considered to be one of the most successful hip-hop duos of all time, famous for their dark and hardcore delivery.

Tributes have been pouring in for Prodigy from some of the biggest names of hip-hop and rap, as they pay homage to his legacy and game-changing career.

Nas was one of the first artists to publicly comment on the news after posting a photo of Prodigy on Instagram, along with the words "Prodigy 4 Ever".

Mobb Deep's Havoc, Kejuan Muchita, has not yet commented on the loss of his bandmate, but has posted a tribute on Instagram of the two performing together when they were young.

"Forever," he wrote.

ASAP Rocky, Lil Wayne and Danny Brown are also among some of the stars to remember the life of the hip-hop legend.
