Take a film where two parents face a struggle to pay for their daughter's tuition fees, make them open an illegal casino in their house, let hilarity ensue, and you have yourself... an undeniably disappointing opening in cinemas.

preview for Will Ferrell & Amy Poehler go wild in The House trailer

Yep, Will Ferrell's latest film has not done well so far at the US box office. The House faces an opening of just $9 million against a reported budget of $40 million, and pre-weekend box office projections of $12 million, according to TheWrap.

"We're so disappointed. We had much higher hopes," WB Domestic Distribution President Jeff Goldstein told TheWrap. "It's unfortunate that The House didn't resonate with a wider audience, though we had early screenings where people enjoyed the movie."

And it's been quite a while since a movie has tanked so badly for Will Ferrell.

[Superstar]

You have to go all the way back to the midsts of 1999 – when DVDs were barely a thing – to find a wide release film with Ferrell in the starring role that grossed lower than The House, when Superstar made $8.9 million from 2,061 screens.

While this apparent clanger does its rounds in the cinemas, fans of Ferrell can be heartened with his recent comments about Anchorman, where he didn't rule out the idea of making a threequel in the series.

"Never say never," he admitted. "That's what's really fun about those characters — it could be 10 years from now and we can still play those guys and just be older… and even dumber. So that's the beauty of that."

With that in mind it feels like a good time for some jazz flute.
