Former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield discussed his sexuality and hinted at the idea of a same-sex relationship in the future. Speaking at the press conference for his upcoming play Angels in America, which sees the 33-year-old playing a gay New Yorker with AIDS, he suggested he is open to the idea of exploring a same-sex relationship and feels he's already living the life of a gay man.

When he was asked about how he got into character for the role, he explained to press including Gay Times: "As far as I know, I am not a gay man. Maybe I'll have an awakening later in my life, which I'm sure will be wonderful and I'll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I'm secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well.

"I adore it, but a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role?"

He later explained that he had developed an obsession with RuPaul's Drag Race (along with most of the world) while working on the play, which meant huge binging sessions.

He said: "I mean every single series of RuPaul's Drag Race. I mean every series. My only time off during rehearsals – every Sunday, I would have eight friends over and we would just watch Ru. This is my life outside of this play. I am a gay man right now just without the physical act–that's all."

Garfield actually made a cameo at a RuPaul gig earlier this year, which saw him bust out on stage to lip-sync to Whitney Houston and do a backflip much to the audience's amazement.

Continuing to speak about his work on Tony Kushner's play, which is appearing at the National Theatre in London, he said: "I will say it's the most fulfilling creative experience I'll ever hope to have. I don't think it can get better than this in terms of everything. Communion with the audience–us all going through the same things together and how prevalent and how necessary it is to tell this story right now. "

It's unclear whether Garfield was entirely serious or making a joke, but the comments rankled some people for their tone deafness.

Garfield previously dated fellow Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone. They broke up back in 2015, although they have reassured everyone many times that they remain good friends.
