Atari has released the first details of its all-new console, the Ataribox, the first console from the legendary gaming firm in more than 20 years.

A first peek at the hardware published in an online newsletter shows the retro-styled games machine featuring a sleek, ribbed design with front facing indicator lights and logo.

Clearly inspired by iconic Atari consoles of old, the two editions feature wood-style panelling at the front and black and red colours respectively.

Atari say its wants to produce a console that "stays true to [its] heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari".

Three types of port are also mentioned, as if they in themselves were selling points: HDMI, USB and SD. This certainly makes it sound somewhat more substantial than the recent mini Nintendo Classic Edition.

"As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs," reads the Atari info. "It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content."

It's unclear what "current gaming content" means – and no other information has been released – but it raises a lot of questions about the innards of the Ataribox, what software will be powering the new console and what types of game it will host.

It seems highly unlikely that Atari is looking to compete with Sony or Microsoft in the premium joypad market, but could it target new indie games with an Android or Windows-based solution?

We don't know, but Atari has promised to keep us all informed of the journey as the Ataribox takes shape.

"There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead," it says. Ensuring this doesn't go the way of the Coleco Chameleon and so many retro pipe dreams will be the first on the agenda.
