Speaking on Sky Sports, the ex Manchester United player decided to numerically list some of the issues England international Ross Barkley has faced during his time at Everton.

He said the midfielder desperately wanted to "1) score goals, 1) play well, 1) be the star...2)....4) play for England."

Understandably, people had a field day, with one viewer writing: "Phil Neville's brain nearly imploded trying to count to 4," while someone else said: "Can't stop laughing at this. I refuse to believe it's real. I think Phil Neville's a comedy genius having us all on".

Others added: "Someone grab Phil Neville an abacus" and "Just watched this a dozen times can't stop laughin... love how he goes to say 2 then realises he's said one 3x & switches to 4 ".

During the World Cup in 2014, Phil Neville was criticised for his supposedly soporific voice as he co-commentated the England vs Italy match alongside Guy Mowbray.

At the time, Neville responded to the reaction by thanking fans for the feedback and saying that it will only make him better.

A BBC statement read: "Phil is an important, well-respected member of our team and will continue to play a key role throughout the tournament, both as a studio guest and match commentator."
