Former England footballer Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink driving, Cheshire Police have confirmed.

BBC News reports that he was arrested shortly after being stopped by police on Thursday (August 31) night shortly after 2am while driving a black VW Beetle along Altrincham Road in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Cheshire Police said Rooney has been charged with driving while over the prescribed limit and he has been released on bail, with him set to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court later this month.

Rooney moved back to his boyhood club of Everton this summer and retired from international football in August, having made a record 119 appearances for England and becoming England's top scorer with 53 goals.

He confirmed that he was asked by current England manager Gareth Southgate to be part of the squad for this current set of international matches, but turned the opportunity down.

"It is a really tough decision, and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton, and those closest to me," Rooney said in a statement.

"Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege, and I thank everyone who helped me. But I believe now is the time to bow out."

Last month, it was announced that he is expecting his fourth child with his wife Coleen Rooney as she revealed the happy news on Twitter.
