Jared Leto has about as much clue of the Joker's DC future as we do.

Last month saw reports that there are three Joker-related movies in the works at Warner Bros, two with Leto's Joker who was first seen in Suicide Squad, and one origin story outside of the DC Extended Universe.

That movie, apparently set to be produced by Martin Scorsese, will see a new actor play the Clown Prince of Crime, which could get a little complicated – and Leto agrees.

"I'm a little confused too. There are a couple of things happening in the DC world," he told On Demand Entertainment.

"I love the Joker. He's a great character and really fun character to play. But it's a big universe and when you play the Joker, there's no ownership there. You have the honour of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off.

"But there are other films that are in development and I'm excited to see what comes from them."

What we do know is that Leto will be reprising his role as the Joker in a planned Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off within the DCEU, set to be directed by This Is Us duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa.

He will also be seen in Suicide Squad 2, which finally seems to be moving forward as The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor has signed on to direct the sequel, co-writing it with Anthony Tambakis.

Suicide Squad 2 is expected to be released in 2019, although could be delayed due to Will Smith's involvement with Aladdin.

As for the other movies, who knows?
