Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has finally hammered out a history-making deal with Warner Bros to return for the sequel.

After months of negotiations, The Hollywood Reporter says that Patty is expected to make between $7 and $9 million to co-write, produce and direct Wonder Woman 2.

This agreement will make her the highest-paid female director of all time, topping the $5 million that What Women Want and It's Complicated director Nancy Meyers earned at the height of her box office appeal.

The delay in Patty signing up for Wonder Woman is due, according to THR, to the filmmaker wanting to be compensated on the same level as fellow DCEU director Zack Snyder following her movie's runaway success.

Wonder Woman has officially passed Spider-Man, Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy as the highest-earning superhero origin story film ever, and reigns as the summer's biggest blockbuster with $800 million in ticket sales.

With Jenkins and Gal Gadot now officially on board, Wonder Woman 2 is starting to take shape, with Jenkins recently explaining that her vision for the sequel is "totally different" to that of this summer's blockbuster.

"The most exciting thing about [the sequel] is literally seeing her loose in the world now, living those classic stories. Here's Wonder Woman, and what can she do?" the director teased.

That desire to give Wonder Woman 2 a distinct story clearly played a role in Patty Jenkins holding out on making the best possible deal with Warner Bros and DC Entertainment.

Back in June, she told those in attendance at a Women in Film screening: "It doesn't have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany.

"I was like, 'Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy?' And then I suddenly realised, it's not more, it's another movie. It's its own movie. And it's got to be great."

Wonder Woman 2 will arrive in cinemas just two years from now on December 13, 2019.
