That Akira live-action movie reboot still might happen.

Deadline reports that Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi is the latest director to be considered for the long-gestating project, with the director currently in talks with Warner Bros.

The live-action reboot of the anime classic will adapt Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel set in 'Neo-Tokyo', with the movie said to be transplanted to a rebuilt New Manhattan as a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment.

Warner Bros' intention is to make two movies, each covering three books in the series, and Akira has been a big priority since Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures acquired the rights from manga publisher Kodansha.

Earlier this year, Get Out director Jordan Peele revealed that he turned down the chance to direct Akira, despite it being one of his favourite movies.

"I think obviously the story justifies as big a budget as you can possibly dream of. But the real question for me is: Do I want to do pre-existing material, or do I want to do original content? At the end of the day, I want to do original stuff," he explained.

It's fair to say there's a lot of apprehension over turning Akira into a live-action movie, especially since the critical and financial flop of Ghost in the Shell earlier this year, which was also hit with whitewashing criticisms.

We'll just have to wait and see if a live-action Akira ever becomes a reality.
