Twitter is trialling doubling its character count, and users are divided.

On Tuesday, the social media site announced it would test expanding the text limit to 280 characters, doubling the current total of 140.

"Can't fit your Tweet into 140 characters?" it asked. "We're trying something new with a small group, and increasing the character limit to 280."

The change would mean tweets will now be twice as long, and a longer word count will be trialled for certain users before a conclusive decision is reached.

In a blog post, Twitter said the goal of the trial was to eliminate the constraints of the current word limit, which its internal research proved is a significant barrier to people tweeting.

"When people don't have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting – which is awesome," it said.

"Although we feel confident about our data and the positive impact this change will have, we want to try it out with a small group of people before we make a decision to launch to everyone."

Nonetheless, the news didn't go down all too well with... Twitter users, actually, including celebrities such as Kumail Nanjiani and Westworld's Shannon Woodward.

Go figure.

Although some people are all for it:
