After welcoming the birth of his twins earlier this summer and promoting his latest film Suburbicon, you'd be forgiven for thinking new father George Clooney might be a bit too exhausted to delve into political debate.

But this is Clooney we're talking about.

In response to President Donald Trump's attack on NFL players who protested by kneeling during the national anthem last week, Clooney wrote a poem about race, the future of the US, the armed forces and the importance of unity in times of peril.

The result is... well just read if yourself, as published in the Daily Beast:

"I pray for my country.

I pray that we can find more that unites us than divides us.

I pray that our nation's leaders want to do the same.

I pray that young children like Tamir Rice can feel safe in their own neighbourhood.

I pray for all of our children.I pray for our police and our first responders.

I pray for our men and women of the armed services.

I pray that dissent will always be protected in this great country.

I pray for a more perfect union.

And when I pray, I kneel."

Preach.
