Football fans are always yammering on about the Match of the Day studio's mistreatment of certain teams, but Newcastle United fans might just have a leg to stand on.

A subtitle goof happened in Sunday's broadcast of Match of the Day 2, and was captured and uploaded by a fan on Twitter.

Commentator Guy Mowbray was speaking about Daniel Sturridge when he said: "Sturridge has scored in all four of his previous Premier League starts at Newcastle.

"For the Reds against the black and whites, he boasts five goals in five appearances."

But the subtitles ended up presenting the comma as "scum".

If you can't understand how that happened, the BBC (who reported on the gaffe) explained that the commentary is spoken into some software that creates the subtitles.

"Our live subtitling service is normally very accurate and makes our content much more accessible, but there are times when unfortunate errors occur.

"On this occasion the error was spotted and corrected immediately."

The BBC subtitles managed to insult an entire town last month, with a sentence stating that the Norfolk town of Cromer was "famous for its crap" instead of its crabs.

The subtitles have also changed "little girl" to "sket" in an episode of EastEnders and replaced Donald Trump's inauguration speech with an episode of Tracy Beaker spin-off The Dumping Ground.
