Our next glimpse of the Fast & Furious gang has been pushed back by 12 months.

The ninth film in the franchise has had its release date moved to 2020 (via ScreenRant), with Universal giving it the April 20 slot that was previously being held for Trolls 2.

The animated sequel has been brought forward two months for a Valentine's Day 2020 release instead.

The news comes as we're hearing lots of talk about where the Fast & Furious franchise is heading over the next few years, with the possibility we could see a spinoff featuring Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham).

That's alongside two officially planned films to complete the trilogy started by this year's The Fate of the Furious.

Could this postponement of Fast & Furious 9 mean we see the spinoff first?

The Hobbs-Shaw film isn't thrilling everyone though, with Tyrese Gibson telling Johnson in a post on his Instagram page: "If you move forward with that #Hobbs Movie you will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter.

"I don't wanna hear from you until you remember what we talked about. I'm on your timeline cause you're not responding to my texts messages. #FastFamily is just that a family……We don't fly solo."

Days later he added: "I want you to shoot it just not right now cause the #Fast9 release date has already been announced and we can't let our loyal fans #FastFamily or our loyal fast and furious FANS down on any level from pushing the date."

We don't reckon we'll see Gibson queuing for a ticket to any spinoff.

Elsewhere, Helen Mirren has thrown her driving gloves into the ring and announced she wants to reprise her role as Magdalene Shaw in the series, so long as she's allowed to drive this time.

That seems possible with her son Deckard (Statham) a potential focus for the above-mentioned spinoff.
