Stand-up comedian Sean Hughes has sadly passed away, aged 51.

His management confirmed the news on Monday.

Sean's latest tweet, dated 8 October, had said that he was in hospital.

The Irishman was best known as being team captain on the long running BBC music quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, as well as his celebrated stand-up career. He also appeared in Coronation Street.

Sean's career began in the late 1980s when he started performing at The Comedy Store in London, and in 1990 he became the youngest ever winner of the Perrier Comedy Award for his Edinburgh Festival show A One Night Stand With Sean Hughes.

His Channel 4 sitcom Sean's Show was nominated for a British Comedy Award in 1992. Sean was also a regular on BBC radio, and his acting credits included roles in The Commitments, Casualty and ITV drama The Last Detective.

Fellow comedian Jason Manford has paid tribute to him on Twitter, writing: "Very sad to hear about Sean Hughes. A brilliant comic and a lovely bloke. RIP."

Al Murray, David Schneider, Richard Herring and Jo Caulfield were also among those paying tribute.
