You're supposed to meet your friend at 7pm, and yet there you are: 6.55pm, still in bed, locked into your fifth straight episode of The Sopranos, a good forty minutes distance from your meeting point. Suddenly, a text: "I'm here. Where you?" Standing up to get ready, you shamelessly reply: "Nearly there."

You'll later blame your tardiness on a slow-moving bus and you'll get to go on being the disappointing friend you always have been – but what if he could have called you out on your bullshit straight away?

How? WhatsApp has just launched a new feature which lets you track your friends and families' locations in real time.

The app's new 'Live Location' feature, which you can opt-in to from any chat, allows others to view your exact location for 15 minutes, an hour, or eight hours.

All WhatsApp users have to do is open a chat with the person or group they want to share with and find the new option to "Share Live Location" under "Location" in the attach button.

You can choose for how long you want to share and tap send, then each person in the chat will be able to see your real-time location on a map.

And if more than one person shares their Live Location in the group, all locations will be visible on the same map.

In a statement, WhatsApp said: "Whether you're meeting up with friends, letting loved ones know you're safe, or sharing your commute, Live Location is a simple and secure way to let people know where you are.

"This end-to-end encrypted feature lets you control who you share with and for how long. You can choose to stop sharing at any time or let the Live Location timer simply expire."

Live Location is available on both Android and iPhone and will be rolling out in the app in the coming weeks.
