Even though it was treated as a big revelation in Game of Thrones' season seven finale, Jon Snow's true identity was a bit of an open secret.

Fans had already done the R+L=J equation from the books and it turns out that even the show planted a clever Easter egg to Jon's true name way back in season three, and it wasn't even in a scene with Kit Harington.

An eagle-eyed fan – are there any others when it comes to Thrones? – has shared on Reddit that the first word Shireen Baratheon taught Davos to read was Aegon.

"This word is Aegon. When you see the A, E and G together like that, it sounds like 'egg'," she told him, unaware that she was actually telling Davos how to pronounce the name of person he's now loyal to.

It was such a clever Easter egg that even Davos actor Liam Cunningham had no idea about the significance of it. "They're very good at that sort of thing. David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] plant little Easter eggs there if you want to see them," he told HuffPost.

"I don't know what the hell's gonna happen from one episode to the next. That's testament to how good the writing is on that, too. After seven seasons, people are still asking the same question they asked in season one: Who do you think is gonna end up on the throne?"

The season seven finale also potentially featured an Easter egg when the Night King marched his army past the Wall, with their shape resembling the Stark emblem flipped backwards.
