Jeremy Piven has strenuously denied "appalling" allegations of past sexual misconduct.

CBS made an announcement on Tuesday that it's looking into accusations from actress Ariane Bellamar that Piven groped her on the set of his former show Entourage and at the Playboy Mansion years ago.

In a series of tweets, Bellamar alleged that the Primetime Emmy Award winner cornered her on two occasions and "forcefully" groped her breasts and bottom.

Piven's spokesperson subsequently told Digital Spy: "I unequivocally deny the appalling allegations being peddled about me. It did not happen. It takes a great deal of courage for victims to come forward with their histories, and my hope is that the allegations about me that didn't happen, do not detract from stories that should be heard."

Piven starred on HBO's Entourage as brash Hollywood agent Ari Gold between 2004 and 2011, and later returned to the character for a 2015 feature film spin-off.

An HBO spokesperson addressed these allegations to The Hollywood Reporter: "Today, via the press reports, is the first we are hearing about Ariane Bellamar's allegations concerning Jeremy Piven.

"Everyone at HBO and our productions is aware that zero tolerance for sexual harassment is our policy. Anyone experiencing an unsafe working environment has several avenues for making complaints that we take very seriously."

Piven has since gone on to play real-life department store magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge in the hit ITV period drama Mr Selfridge, and more recently returned stateside for the CBS drama Wisdom of the Crowd.

In response to the sexual misconduct allegations now levied against Piven, a CBS representative said on Tuesday: "We are aware of the media reports and are looking into the matter."
