Let's face it, Sir David Attenborough is basically the nation's granddad, so it's no surprise that Blue Planet II has been revealed as the most watched UK TV show of the year so far.

The opening episode of the Attenborough-narrated wildlife series, which is a follow up to 2001's Blue Planet, has attracted an average of 14.1 million viewers in the week since it was first broadcast, according to The Guardian.

This makes Blue Planet II's premiere the most watched programme of 2017 so far, just ahead of the One Love Manchester charity concert in June, which had 11.6 million viewers.

Speaking about the show, Sir David told the BBC: "I am truly thrilled to be joining this new exploration of the underwater worlds which cover most of our planet, yet are still its least known."

The third episode of the seven-part series of Blue Planet II will continue next Sunday (12 November) at 8pm on BBC One.
